چکیده

A new categorical factor analysis metbad is proposed and it is applied to investigate the influence of phonemic context on the distribution ofvowel spectra. Conventional categorical factor analysis methods, such as quantification theory, assume that the influence ofmultiple categories are expressed by the linear combination of that of single category. In onr method, the theory is modified to deal with nonlinear factor. Using this method, the multiple correlation coefficients are improved by 3.67.8% as compared with the conventionallinear method and some nonlinear categorical factors which affect the vowel distribution became apparent.

Identification and Distribution of Interactional Contexts in EFL Classes: The Effect of Two Contextual Factors

This study aims at empirically furthering awareness of the organization of interaction in EFL classes. Informed by the methodological framework of conversation analysis, it draws upon a corpus of 52 three-hour naturally-occurring classroom interaction to identify classroom interactional contexts based on the structuring of the pedagogic goals in turn-taking sequences. Conversation analytic proc...

A Phonetically-Based Model of Phonological Vowel Reduction

This paper proposes an analysis of phonological vowel reduction according to which vowel contrasts are subject to neutralization in unstressed syllables because it is more difficult to keep vowels distinct where vowel duration is shorter. Where the durational difference between stressed and unstressed vowels is large enough, it may not be possible to realize the same number of vowel contrasts i...

Factor Analysis of Vowel Pronunciation in Swedish Dialects

In this study 91 local Swedish dialects were analysed based on vowel pronunciation. Acoustic measurements of vowel quality were made for 18 vowels of 1,014 speakers by means of principal component analysis of vowel spectra. Two principal components were extracted explaining more than 34 of the total variance in the vowel spectra. Plotting vowels in the PC1-PC2 plane showed a solution with stron...

Low Vowel Raising in Sinitic Languages: Assimilation, Reduction, or Both?

Many Sinitic languages respect low vowel raising (LVR) whereby the low vowel /a/ is raised to /e/ only when flanked by a palatal glide and a coronal coda. In this article, I show that LVR in Sinitic languages is a genuine process of grammar because low-level phonetic coarticulatory effects alone cannot account for crosslinguistic/dialectal variation. Specifically, my survey reveals that vowel d...

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
